The student is expected to make their own arrangements for assistance whenever possible. Examples include having a friend drive the student to class or borrowing notes from a classmate.

Step 2:
Students are responsible for contacting each of their instructors regarding their absence from class, missed assignments, and course expectations.

a. If the student will be absent for an extended time (eg: a week or longer), it is important for the student to discuss the situation with their instructors to determine the feasibility of remaining in their course.

b. If it is necessary to withdraw from BSC after the last day to drop, the student may contact BSC’s Academic Records  at bsc.records@tilar.net for information about the appeal process.

Step 3:
If the student is unable to make their own arrangements for specific needs, the student can submit the Temporary Medical Conditions form to arrange for possible assistance.

a. Documentation from the treating professional will also need to be submitted and must:

- be on a letterhead and signed by the medical professional
- contain a clear diagnosis or explanation of what occurred
- identify the relevant limitations of the condition, such as "cannot walk more than 30 feet"
- state an approximate length of time the student will be impacted, if possible

b. Documentation can be:
- emailed to bsc.accessibility@tilar.net,
- dropped off in Schafer Hall 135c, or;
- mailed to BSC Student Accessibility, Schafer Hall 135c, PO Box 5587, Bismarck, ND 58506-5587

c. Please note that equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches, and/or off-campus parking permits need to be accessed through the student’s health care provider.

Step 4:
Requests for possible temporary housing arrangements for students living on campus can be made by the Housing Office at bsc.housing@tilar.net.

Bismarck State College (BSC) supports and accommodates pregnant and parenting students under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (June 23) from the US Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights, “Supporting the Academic Success of Pregnant and Parenting Students.”

Pregnant and parenting students are entitled to all programs and activities sponsored by the college. BSC departments and units must not discriminate against a student based on the following:

· Pregnancy
· Childbirth
· False pregnancy
· Termination of the pregnancy; and
· Recovery from any of these conditions.

Student Absence due to Pregnancy

A student’s absence because of pregnancy or childbirth must be excused if the student’s doctor deems the absence medically necessary.

If absences are due to pregnancy, faculty must allow a student to submit work after the deadline and earn class attendance and participation points. The faculty member will work with the student to determine how to make up missed work and points.

A school may offer the student alternatives to making up missed work, from which the student should be allowed to choose. Possible alternatives include the following: retaking the semester; taking part in an online format to complete the course; or continuing at the same pace, finishing at a later date by allowing the student additional time in a program.

Services for Pregnant/Parenting Students

Pregnant students will be provided with special services that are provided to those who have a temporary medical condition. At Bismarck State College, Student Accessibility will determine and coordinate appropriate services. Students must submit a Temporary Medical Conditions Form. Medical documentation will also be requested through BSC’s Student Accessibility Services.

Pregnant students may be allowed additional services based upon functional limitations imposed by the pregnancy. Examples may include requiring a larger desk and being allowed frequent trips to the bathroom.
